Rooted: Native Trees for Urban and Rural America

You won't want to miss Gary's NEW five book series beginning with Rooted: Native Trees for Urban and Rural America. Professor Hightshoe, known as "tree-whisperer" and "godfather of the prairie" in intimate circles of friends, family, and colleagues, breathes life and voice into our many green friends found in the depths, the mystery, and beauty of nature and the great outdoors.

Author and Illustrator of North American Plantfile and Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines for Urban and Rural America, Hightshoe extends and transforms the meaning and significance of the role trees play in the quality of human life and the fabric of our existence. Despite the critical but sometimes invisible relationship we have with trees, a life without them is unfathomable. It is with great hope that Gary inspires us all to treasure the gift of a tree.

Vanishing Landscapes - The Farm I - X

Regardless of each individual's beliefs of HOW and WHY, the fact remains that many of our world's wonders are vanishing due to human action - or inaction. While this includes many of our natural resources and the beauty Mother Earth and nature holds and cradles, it also includes values, ways of life, saving sacred or safe space, and diverse communities and cultures of people.

Gary has lived his entire life as an advocate, champion, and spokesperson for Mother Nature, for water, for trees, for butterflies, birds, and bees, for native prairie, for clean air, for our national parks, for our breathtaking landscapes, and... for the American Farmer.

He sees the agrarian American Dream of "The Farmer" slipping away, devoured by commercial development and corporate agriculture. Gary's captured a number of  farms and barns across the State of Iowa in Farm I - X featured below.

Many of these beautiful landmarks are either no longer standing or severely dilapidated - merely relics of a time that was.

From the Theodore Roosevelt Collection - GLH

Falling for You is an original GLH watercolor of Mystic Falls at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.

This piece was one of many Savanna Studio assignments given to students to provoke curiosity and provide experiential learning in the field. Savanna Studio at Iowa State University was founded by Hightshoe and is the only traveling Landscape Architecture course in the world.

Originally Little Firehole Falls in 1872, now Mystic Falls, a 70' waterfall located on the Little Firehole River in Yellowstone National Park will allow hikers a chance to visit Old Faithful and Biscuit Basin along the way.

Horn Island is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, MI and an original GLH watercolor.

This piece was a Savanna Studio assignment given to students as inspiration towards deepening their relationships with iconic, yet vanishing landscapes.

A favorite muse of Mississippi artist Walter Anderson, the beauty of Horn Island is currently under attack due to trash, chemicals, and human carelessness making dead zones due to low oxygen levels. Without action, Horn Island will disappear by 2100.

The Gulf of America has the highest levels of ocean plastics in the world.

Enchantment is an original GLH watercolor from 2011 of Enchanted Rock SNA, TX at sunset.

SNA or State Natural Area is designated to natural landscapes or water areas acclaimed and protected for their tremendous value and hold a treasure of gems: remarkable flora and fauna, endangered or threatened species, and critical habitat.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, located at 16710 Ranch Rd 965, Fredericksburg, TX 78624, is shared by Gillespie and Llano counties sitting on Big Sandy Creek. Triangular in shape, the park is 1,643 acres and is known for it's fantastic pink granite dome.

Navajo Rising is an original GLH watercolor of Navajo National Monument within the Navajo Nation, AZ

This piece was one of many Savanna Studio assignments given to encourage reflection and cultural inclusion through learning about and valuing the rich history of the Navajo Nation.

Navajo National Monument preserves and protects our collective American identity, the deep connection of the land, and the cultural value of the Ancestral Puebloans known as the Anasazi.

Nestled in the Shonto Plateau, the breathtaking monument peers out over the Tsegi Canyon system in northern Arizona near Tonalea.

Blue Ribbon is an original GLH watercolor of Ribbon Lake at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.

This piece was one of many Savanna Studio assignments given students in 2011. Savanna Studio at Iowa State University, the only traveling Landscape Architecture Studio Class in the world, was founded by Hightshoe with the intention of providing students with experiential learning in the field.

Ribbon Lake can be accessed through Ribbon Lake Trail and admired for it's placid tranquility. Visitors will enjoy a 7 mile adventure through forest, thermal features, and geyser basins.

The Enchanted is an original GLH watercolor rendering of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.

This piece was one of many Savanna Studio assignments given to encourage spontaneity, and taking action. Savanna Studio at Iowa State University was founded by Hightshoe and is the only traveling Landscape Architecture course in the world.
